The Law School Internship Program provides law school students with an invaluable experience during their time spent at the Howard County State’s Attorney’s Office. This program has been implemented to allow a student to observe and participate in all facets of a criminal investigation and due process through the criminal court system. It is the intention of our office and the prosecutor assigned to the intern to offer a hands-on experience which will enhance their traditional course of study at their chosen university.
We offer many rewarding and exciting opportunities reviewing the following types of cases:
- General Crimes (handles matters that originate in District Court when a jury trial demand is elected)
- Major Crimes (handles murder cases, major theft, robbery, arson, burglary, wiretapping investigations, large drug operations, economic crimes, vehicular manslaughter, first-degree assault and firearms crimes)
- Special Victims Unit (handles domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking and animal abuse)
- Juvenile Crimes (handles delinquency cases involving youth under the age of 18 who are charged with committing a criminal act)
The Law School Internship Program is designed for law school students only. We accept applications year-round and interview candidates on a rolling basis. Each Division has a limited number of placements for non-salaried interns. Interns have the unique opportunity to receive hands-on experiences in the preparation of the prosecution of criminal cases in either our District Court Division or our Circuit Court Division. Although the intern will generally be assigned to a primary prosecutor, from time to time, he or she will be assigned to others within the State’s Attorney’s Office to include other prosecutors and personnel from various units within our department. The primary prosecutor will complete a work performance evaluation at the end of the program. A copy of that evaluation will be provided to the student’s university’s practicum coordinator. Please note: Internship positions are unpaid and on a volunteer basis.
Students are required to give the office a minimum number of hours per week. If a student is performing the internship for academic credit, it is the student’s responsibility to communicate the institutional requirements to our office before the internship begins. We have spring, summer, and fall semester internship programs available. Spaces are limited. Internships will be selected after a detailed review.
