According to the latest statistics, there were more than 15,000 domestic violence-related crimes reported in Maryland and 46 domestic violence-related deaths in Maryland from July 2017 to June 2018. Domestic violence is a significant problem not only in our state, but right here in Howard County. Our office has one goal in mind when working on these cases—to hold abusers accountable for their actions. Prosecutors in our Special Victims Unit must consider the facts and circumstances of each case, including victim and community safety, in their efforts to seek an appropriate outcome for all involved. An advocate from our office’s Victim/Witness Unit proactively works with domestic violence victims shortly after their criminal case is filed to ensure safety measures are in place for the victim and provide support throughout the legal process. Our office also collaborates with our domestic violence community partner, HopeWorks Howard County, which provides services and counseling to victims of domestic violence.
